Camel Beauty Queen Contest:For the first time in Saudi Arabia, women took out a parade of 'desert ship', see special photos
For the first time, women in Saudi Arabia have participated in the camel beauty queen competition. During the beauty contest, Saudi women parade the "ships of the desert" i.e. camels. Lamiya al-Rashidi, 27, was among the women who competed on Saturday in the Ruma Desert, northeast of Riyadh. He said, "I hope we have a position now. Inshallah."
According to the news agency AFP, earlier only men took part in the King Abdelaziz festival with their camels. This is the first time that this event has been organized for women. Lamiya al-Rashidi's family owns 40 camels. She says, “I have been interested in camels since I was young. When this type of event was announced for women, I decided to participate in it.”
However, 40 contestants took part in this event, out of which the top 5 winners were given a prize of about $260,000. The beauty of a camel is measured on several parameters. But the shape of the lips, neck and their hump are especially seen in them.
In December, a camel beauty contest was organized for men. Many contestants were thrown out because they had given Botox injections to their camels. There is a ban on adopting such tricks to beautify the camel.
This oil-rich Gulf country strictly follows the rules of Islam. But some restrictions on women have been lifted since Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman came to power in 2017. This change has given opportunities to women to come forward in many fields. However, action is still going on against those who voice the protest.
"Women have always been an integral part of Bedouin society. They owned and looked after the camels," said festival manager Mohamed al-Harbi. Another participant, Munira al-Mishkhas, said: "Camels have been a part of our society for a long time, but organizing a competition for us (women) is a big step."
